About Wes-cessible

Welcome To Wes-cessible!

Wes-cessibility is here to help you access accessibility!

This world was not made for people with disabilities. Ill-adapted means of communication, discrimination, societal stigma, inaccessible transportation, buildings, and environments, and unavailability of assistive technologies – are just a few barriers to full societal inclusion faced by people with disabilities.

According to The World Bank, nearly 20% of the planet’s human inhabitants have a disability that limits one or more activities of daily living. That means that roughly one and a half billion people, experience some form of disability, with 5% of those experiencing disability with a great impact on their daily functioning, and 1% of the world’s population using a wheelchair.

There is a massive market for making college campuses accessible. The US alone has 19.6 million college students – 20% of whom are disabled… So why shouldn’t college campuses be accessible?

Despite Wesleyan’s reputation for being one of the historic “Little Three” (a trio of prestigious liberal arts schools in New England), and being #10 on both Forbes and Kiplinger‘s list of top U.S. liberal arts colleges for 2019, the campus is severely lacking in multiple vital areas of accessibility.

Like myself, many disabled and mobility challenged people know that the majority of online resources for accessible travel/transportation and school resources can be limited, unreliable, and all-around confusing.
